World Rugby issued a shocking statement this morning saying South Africa have been stripped of the 2023 Rugby World Cup title.
The Springboks won the Webb Ellis Cup last year by defeating New Zealand 12-11 in the final, a record-tying fourth victory in France.
However, World Rugby issued a statement saying that, having considered media coverage and comment from pundits in recent weeks, they have decided that Ireland are the best team in the world and therefore should be world champions.
“We listened and decided to take action.” A statement from World Rugby read:
“You keep telling us Ireland are the best team in the world and they beat South Africa in the pool stage of the Rugby World Cup so let’s make it official and award Ireland the Rugby World Cup. I made it.”
Ireland only reached the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup, but had some pretty impressive performances against Italy and Wales in the Six Nations, and let's not forget their away win against France. .
World Rugby declined to comment when asked about this year's Six Nations match between Ireland and England, but Springbok manager Rassie Erasmus tweeted a 60 Minutes video.
